The Complete Guide to Marquee Linings: Types, Uses and How to Choose the Right One

THE UK'S TOP MARQUEE LININGS EXPERTS

Marquee lining is one of the most important; and most underappreciated elements of any temporary event space. It is the difference between a shell and a space. Between somewhere functional and somewhere people genuinely want to be.

If you are a marquee hire company, an event production agency or an event organiser trying to understand what lining options are available and which one is right for your event, this is the guide we wish existed when we started twenty years ago.

What is marquee lining and what material is a marquee lining made of?

Marquee lining is the fabric or material installed on the interior walls, ceiling and roof of a temporary structure to create a finished event environment. It conceals the structural elements of the marquee, the poles, the beams, the canvas exterior, and transforms the raw interior into a space that feels considered, warm and professionally finished.

Most marquee linings are made from polyester fabric, lightweight, durable, fire-resistant and available in a wide range of weights, finishes and colours. The fabric is typically manufactured to order, cut to the exact dimensions of the structure it will line and installed using a variety of techniques depending on the structure type and the desired finish.

At LOCK5 we manufacture all our lining fabric in-house using CNC precision cutting technology, allowing us to produce linings to exact specification for any structure, in any size, in any colour. We manufactured 35,000m² of lining fabric in a single year.

Types of marquee lining; and which to choose

Ruched lining

The most traditional and widely used marquee lining style. Ruched lining is gathered fabric installed in soft, flowing folds across walls and ceilings, creating a warm, romantic and classic event aesthetic. Popular for weddings, gala dinners and formal events. Available in white, ivory and a range of colours.

Best for: weddings, black tie events, formal corporate dinners

Pleated marquee lining

Similar to ruched but with a more structured, tailored finish. Pleated linings create defined vertical or horizontal folds that give a space a slightly more contemporary feel. A clean, considered look that works beautifully in corporate environments.

Best for: corporate events, award ceremonies, product launches

Flat lining

A clean, smooth finish with no gathering or folding, the lining sits flat against the structure walls and ceiling. Creates a modern, minimal aesthetic and works particularly well as a backdrop for projection, branding and lighting effects.

Best for: brand activations, exhibitions, tech events, projection-heavy environments

Nightsky marquee lining
LOCK5's most popular and sought-after specialist lining. Deep midnight blue with integrated LED fibre optics that create a stunning starlight effect across the ceiling. The Nightsky transforms any temporary structure into something truly spectacular. We install thousands of square metres of it every winter season, including approximately 2,400m² at the Honourable Artillery Company in London every year. Nothing creates atmosphere in a temporary event space quite like it. When guests walk in and look up, the evening begins.

Best for: winter events, Christmas parties, gala dinners, awards evenings, premium hospitality

Starlight marquee lining
Similar in effect to Nightsky, starlight lining uses integrated LED points to create a glittering ceiling effect. Available in a range of base colours and LED densities to suit different event aesthetics.

Best for: evening events, celebrations, weddings, hospitality

Blackout lining

A specialist lining that prevents external light from penetrating the structure; essential for events where projection, screening or complete light control is required. Also highly effective for daytime events that need to create a strong atmospheric interior regardless of external light conditions.

Best for: cinema events, projection mapping, immersive experiences, daytime events requiring atmosphere

Acoustic lining

Specialist fabric with acoustic properties that absorbs sound within a temporary structure; reducing echo, managing sound bleed between spaces and improving the acoustic quality of the event environment. Essential for events with live music, speeches, presentations or entertainment where sound quality matters.

Best for: conferences, live music events, award ceremonies, any event with amplified audio

Thermal lining

A lining with thermal insulation properties that reduces heat loss from a temporary structure, improving energy efficiency and reducing heating costs. Particularly valuable for long-duration events or winter installations where heating bills are a significant operational consideration.

Best for: long-duration events, winter builds, events in exposed locations

Printed and graphic lining

Fully bespoke lining printed with custom graphics, patterns, branding or imagery. The most powerful tool available for brand immersion within a temporary event environment. Designed and manufactured in-house at LOCK5 to exact client specification.

Best for: brand activations, product launches, branded hospitality, experiential events

Tack-off lining

A specialist installation technique where fabric is secured directly to the structure frame using a tack-off rail system. Produces a very clean, flat finish and is particularly effective in complex or curved structures where standard lining systems cannot achieve the required result. One of LOCK5's core specialisms; we have been doing it for twenty years.

Best for: complex structures, curved roofs, installations requiring a particularly clean finish

Can you use the same fabric for different types of lining?

Yes and no. The base fabric used for marquee linings is often similar; typically a polyester fabric in various weights, but the finish, the installation method and the specific performance requirements vary significantly between lining types. Acoustic linings require a fabric with specific acoustic properties. Blackout linings require a fabric with light-blocking characteristics. Nightsky and starlight linings require integrated LED fibre optics woven into the fabric itself.

At LOCK5 we manufacture specialist linings in-house, which means we can ensure that every lining, whatever its type, is produced to the exact specification required for its intended application.

Marquee lining hire versus professional marquee lining installation

There is an important distinction between hiring marquee linings and having them professionally installed by a specialist lining company.

Marquee lining hire typically refers to the supply of stock linings in standard sizes and finishes that can be used across a range of structures. This is appropriate for straightforward installations where standard sizes work and the finish requirements are not highly specific.

Professional marquee lining installation; the service LOCK5 provides, goes significantly further. We assess the structure, design the lining scheme, manufacture to exact specification where required and install by our own expert team to the standard our clients expect. For events like Royal Ascot, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Goodwood, professional lining installation is not optional. It is fundamental.

Marquee lining maintenance; keeping your stock in condition

For marquee hire companies with their own stock of linings, maintenance between seasons is critical. Linings that go back into service without being properly laundered, inspected and repaired will underperform; and in a premium event environment, underperformance is visible.

LOCK5 offers a complete marquee lining maintenance service; professional laundering, inspection and repair, for marquee hire companies, structure specialists and event production agencies across the UK. We laundered 95,000m² of lining last year alone. Neptunus, GL Events, Arena and Fews trust us with theirs between seasons.

How to choose the right marquee lining for your event

The right lining depends on four things: the structure type, the event aesthetic, the functional requirements and the budget.

Start with the structure. Not every lining works in every structure; curved roofs, multi-bay clearspans, pagodas and tensile structures all have specific requirements that influence which lining systems are appropriate.

Then consider the aesthetic. What do you want guests to feel when they walk in? Warm and romantic? Clean and contemporary? Dramatic and atmospheric? Each lining type creates a different feeling and the right choice will be the one that serves the overall event vision.

Then consider the functional requirements. Does the event need acoustic management? Light control? Thermal performance? These requirements narrow the field significantly.

Finally, consider the budget. A slightly higher investment in the right lining, properly installed, will always deliver better value than a cheaper option that does not perform. If you are not sure where to start, talk to us. This is what we do.
